We receive a lot of questions from CPA candidates about whether they should be using a computer- or paper-based outline when writing cases. We asked one of our blog contributors, Alla Volodina, to give our students some helpful advice.

Question: “Should I use a computer-based outline or paper-based outline when writing cases?”

Alla Volodina: “There are definitely pros and cons to both. For example, when writing a comprehensive simulation, some students prefer using a paper-based outline as a road map to guide their written responses. A visual representation of all the case’s requirements will make it easier for students to remember to address all the issues. For the non-comprehensive simulations, many students prefer to use a computer-based outline. This technique is proving to be extremely beneficial and a huge time saver. By jotting down some key case facts (avoid rewriting the entire simulation), students can quickly access those notes directly on the computer screen as they are writing their response. This also allows students to move the case facts around directly on the computer screen.

Question: “I heard that some students do not prepare an outline. Is this wise?”

Alla Volodina: “After speaking with many top-performing students, it is evident that it will depend on your personal style. However, most successful students do prepare at least a basic outline, whether it is on paper or on a computer. In addition to using an outline, they might use margin notes. However, most successful students definitely jot down the requirements either using either method.”

Question: “Are page references necessary on a paper outline?”

Alla Volodina: “Page references are unnecessary if you are writing a non-comprehensive simulation, as they are short. Page references are helpful when writing a comprehensive simulation.”
